Design happens in the moments, jot it down.

We’ve all had those moments, in the shower, on the treadmill, in the car. That fleeting spark of genius hits you and you promise yourself you’ll capture it as soon as you get back to your desk.

But will you? I don’t.

Leo Widrich from Business Insider explains how your brain works more creatively when it is relaxed, and distracted. As designers, our deadlines are tight, to perform builds, and we feel a needs to stay active. When we creatives reach a block, we need to hit the reset button.

Where do you reset?

Im a bike commuter in the north shores of Lake Superior. I spend hours a week on my Specialized Fatboy fat bike trudging through the snow in the wood all by myself listening to Danny Brown or something appropriately energetic.

Here’s how I capture those fleeting thoughts:

  1. Tul retractable needlepoint pen

    • simply the best non-smearing, technical pens I’ve used

  2. Moleskine notebook

    • I’m motivated to sketch when it feels right. Moleskine has a magic to their paper texture. The ink just sits on top confident and bold where other papers cause the ink to soak in a fuzz out. The magic is while the ink doesn’t soak in, it also doesn’t smear.

    • get the pocket sized book and never leave with out it.

  3. iPad +Apple Pencil

    • sketchbook pro for the best industrial design style sketching

    • Adobe Photoshop for iPad for a more feature packed design session

    • Procreate for artsy brush strokes and realistic pigment behavior

  4. Rocketbook smart notebook

    • Wipes away clean

    • smart cloud storage options for sketches and notes

Keep a sketchbook near you at all times. On your desk, nightstand, and in your pocket. You’ll be shocked at how more mature and well received your proposals will be.
